5 things to never do at a non-professional event

Conducting yourself at a non-professional events can be tricky. You want to be relaxed, joke around and be "you". On the other hand, you should never let all your self show. Although everybody there is in a casual atmosphere, we are all professional people. At the end of the night your actions can make or break you in your future. Here are 5 things to never do at a non-professional event:

  1. Blame it on the Alcohol. When you're drinking (heavy) you have little to no control over the things you say and/or do. We've all been to the company Christmas party and seen the office "drunk" offend some or all of his or her coworkers. So limit your drinks.
  2. I want your sex. Leave overtly sexual tones or talk to the bedroom. Ok you're at one of those "passion parties". Still no one want to picture you and your mate(s) rolling in the hay or want to know your freaky bedroom antics. It's gross and unladylike. Remember, lady in street (anywhere in public) and freak in the sheets.
  3. Potty Mouth 101. Need I say more. I have spit out a curse word or two in my days. However, I have seen young ladies curse like sailors. Ladies not a good look especially if you're single or looking for a job.
  4. Dressing to impress. Although this is a casual event still allow a little effort on your part. You can still wear the cute dress that shows off your legs but make sure little to no cleavage is showing. If you're going to wear jeans make sure they fit properly (not very tight or too baggy) and pair it will a nice top or great fitting graphic t-shirt. You don't want to look sloppy or sleazy to the next person. You never know who they are...
  5. Attention seekers. You know the person who is the loudest for no reason at all. They are usually drunk or seeking needed attention. Everybody who wants to see you, know you're there; no need for all the extra stuff.
Those are my 5 things to never do at a professional event. What do you think and What are some of yours....

The Big Splurge

When you make an investment on something you want to look at the longevity of your investment. Fashion is the same way. Here are 3 fashion pieces you should splurge on:

  1. A great suit. Weather you already have a steady job or looking for one, you should have a great suit in your closet. Make sure you stick to a more neutral and professional colors such as black or gray. This suit need to be nice fitting, tailored and not trendy. This initial investment should be updated every 3 to 4 years for ladies and 5 years for men.
  2. A great Coat. When looking for a expensive coat make sure you stay away from the ruffles, plaids, stripes, etc.. The reason(s) is these embellishments are trendy and it loses it appeal the following year.  You want to wear this coat for many years without looking outdated and seasons behind.
  3. Under-garments such as Bra(s) and shapewear. These things are the foundations to your entire look. An ill-fitting bra and too tight shapewear can make you look unpolished and yes unprofessional. A good bra goes a long way, especially if you properly take care of them. Also, get a bra fitting once a year or if there are any big weight loss.
Here are my big splurge ideas. What are your fashion investments?

Ways to Market yourself when you're looking for a job

You're out of work and feeling hopeless. I am going to tell you some simple ways to market yourself while looking for work.

Always be Prepared:
  • Dress to impress: Meaning look neat and clean at all times even if you're going to the grocery store. You never know who you're going to meet. Ladies wear your make-up and men shave.
  • Business cards can always come in handy. You can get 500 business cards from Vista Print for $10. Inexpensive yet very professional looking.
  • Resume ready and prepared.  Today smarts phones are great because you can download files on them. I once emailed my resume from my smart phone. This not only shows an future employer your ready but it shows you tech savvy.
Go the Extra Mile
  • Volunteer Work always looks great to employers. Tutor a kid at an after school program, join a program like Big Brother Big Sister or neighborhood cleanup. It's good to get involved and you never know who you're going to meet.
  • Sign up for some classes to brush up on your skills.
  • Go to local or community networking events.
Go the road less traveled
  • Take a PT retail job. It brings in some cash and you get to talk to so many different people. For example:
    •  ( While in grad school a former classmate worked as a sales representative at Belks. She had a customer who frequent the store and knew she was in school. After graduating the customer offered her a job in the HR department of a Fortune 500 company.)
    • I also worked PT at H&R Block when one of the DM had a church member looking for someone in his Investment firm. Shortly after graduating I got the job.
  • Temp Jobs can also bring in cash and if the job suits you and the employer they may hire you on permenately.
These are some steps to Market youself to your future employer.....
Tell me something you done to help get your job.

TJMaxx/Marshall's is one of my all time favorite places to shop. You can find brand name clothing and shoes along with great ideas for your home. If you love to shop and don't mind going through hundreds of racks to find that right blouse or those perfect shoes then TJMaxx/Marshall's is just the place to go.

Kohl's is great for designer brands such as Vera Wang, Jennifer Lopez and now new clothing line for men by Marc Anthony. There is no other place you can go to find top designers for less than $100. When you walk in the door you're wowed. Kohls also has a mailing list with saving of 10% to 50% off  your purchase and their no question return policy is an added benefit to your shopping experience.
